The Citizens for Nigeria (CFN) was started by Tunde Odediran, a former Nigerian editor now information technology professional in the United States, and some journalist friends in the United States and Nigeria late in 2004. Although membership continues to evolve, the group is now managed by Odediran, Ayo Abimbola, a US military veteran and analyst, and Biodun Durojaiye, a jounalist and information techonology professional in Nigeria, with a few others who prefer to remain anonymous. None of the operators of the organization has ever held political office, but they are only united in their patriotic zeal to see Nigeria become a real giant in Africa. Their shared deep frustration with the corrupt politics in Abuja and other parts of Nigeria, and the incursion of a corrupt cabal within the ranks of retired military officers in politics is a strong bond that moves the group forward.
The Citizens for Nigeria (CFN) has a central objective of bringing ordinary Nigerians into the political process, whether they are at home or abroad. The CFN was formed out of the realization that Nigerians are suffering because the leaders have hijacked power completely from the citizens, and voters have lost hope in the democratic process. The CFN comes to restore hope by simple, dedicated and targeted actions that would bring real Nigerians back into the political process. If we can bring Nigerians of all persuasions - teachers, doctors, bricklayers, carpenters, journalists, bankers and taxi drivers - and geograhic locations together to interact on national progress, and they can contribute what they have to the process, there will be a change. The CFN is an avenue for concerned citizens to get their voices to be heard in a corrupt and dysfunctional system that Nigerians are forced to live in.
The Citizens for Nigeria (CFN) will engage in different kinds of campaigns through its sub-organs, but it will remain the central body for the various activities.
The CFN organizes quick responses to events of significant results such as elections, legislation and breaking national issues that Nigerians care about. Among others, the Citizens for Nigeria (CFN) uses the web, articles, blogs, petitions, email newsletters, press releases and petition letters as tools for change.
The Citizens for Nigeria (CFN) provides ordinary citizens, who normally have little influence in politics, a never-before-offered opportunity to pull resources together to gain a strong voice in the democratic process. Some of the most important issues that define the future of Nigeria are rarely finalized with the participation of individuals. All this must change, and the The Citizens for Nigeria (CFN) will be the agent of this change. Our mission is to wage a civilized intellectual battle against dangers to good governance, exemplary leadership and virile democracy in Nigeria.
Our vision is to provide a fertile soil for the germination of productive democracy.
We will not act as a front for any politician, political organization or party. Our interest is only to act as a catalyst for change and adviser to the people of Nigeria regarding their civic decisions.
